QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Have a Question? Here’s an Answer

WHAT DOES BY THE REIN EQUINE THERAPY DO DIFFERENTLY THAN OTHERS IN YOUR FIELD?

I have been around horses since I have been young, learned from amazing professionals in the horse industry and have an diverse background working with clients with trauma. For other Equine Therapy programs, there may be two professionals present, one to help with the horse and a therapist for the client. I provide a private therapeutic experience by being able to provide both professions.

WHAT IS YOUR TRAINING METHODOLOGY?

I used Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is an important combination of talk therapy and behavioral therapy. CBT is a type of psychotherapy in which patients re-frame destructive thinking. I also utilize some trauma focused practices.

SO DOES EQUINE THERAPY REALLY WORK?

Research shows positive physical and psychological findings. These include decreased blood pressure and heart rate, lower levels of stress, reduced feelings of tension, anxiety, anger and hostility, as well as increased levels of beta-endorphins, and beneficial feelings of self-esteem, empowerment, patience and trust.

WHY WOULDN'T I JUST TAKE RIDING LESSONS?

Equine Therapy is not riding lessons but psychotherapy with the aid of a horse. Equine Therapy should be conducted by a mental health professional. This allows for the focus to be mental health treatment. Riding lessons are conducted by talented horse trainers but they are not educated in clinical mental health treatment.

WHY IS EQUINE THERAPY MORE EXPENSIVE THAN LESSONS?

Good question! Equine Therapy is not riding lessons rather psychotherapy. Additionally, horses require training and upkeep that is above and beyond what this fee will cover. The fee allows me to provide my horses for therapeutic use and to provide for some of their basic needs. I created this program for the love of horses but in order to provide the best care for them and my clients, there is a cost associated with the program.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM A GOOD FIT FOR EQUINE THERAPY?

I will conduct an initial intake session that is standard practice in the therapeutic process. I will provide the liability packet at the intake session. During the initial session, we will discuss your goals for therapy and how Equine Therapy could be beneficial. I will also request that we meet 2-3 times before your first trip to the barn. I want to ensure that this is an appropriate experience for you and my horses.
